ENCOUNTERS HISTORY

ENCOUNTERS occur every two or three years, spread over a week and occupy every inch and moment of the life of the Queensland Conservatorium. Students, staff and visitors share platforms for music-making and ideas in an array of concerts, recitals, seminars, forums and discussions. Over time, the ENCOUNTERS program has widened to embrace traditional and popular forms of music, dance, art, film, drama, literature and language, religion and philosophy, design, fashion and cuisine. Gradually, ENCOUNTERS has spread to venues all along the two-kilometres of the cultural precinct of South Bank, from the Griffith Film School to the Gallery of Modern Art.

These ENCOUNTERS celebrate the multi-dimensional and multi-cultural nature of music and the arts in Australia. They draw together a diverse array of renowned and accomplished artists from both cultures, visitors and local communities alike who perform alongside gifted young people from Brisbane and elsewhere. They also engage audiences with stimulating and compelling ideas, often in unfamiliar and unexpected ways.
